Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's tennis team fell twice to Division II Tiffin University on Saturday afternoon, dropping both matches by 6-1 counts.
Rookie
Rohan Gold headlined the Yeomen effort in the first match of the day as he gutted out a 2:45 victory over Matt Saunders in the fifth position, winning each set in a tie break 7-6 (6-3) for his first collegiate victory.
Gold, a native of Forest Hills, NY, also partnered with senior
Elliot Nuss at No. 2 doubles to get a 6-4 win over Matthew Telford and Gabriel de Oliveira. Unfortunately, the Dragons would win the first and third flights to secure the lone doubles point available in the match under the Division II scoring format.
Tiffin would cruise with relative ease through singles outside of
Sean Billerbeck having a tight first set against Nair Adi in the second position.
In the nightcap the duo of
Justin Lee and
Nathan Silverstein were 6-3 winners over Nathan Mansor and Hayden Parisien at third doubles but the Dragons were victorious in the top two spots.
Silverstein would add Oberlin's second win and tally the team's lonepoint by dispatching Devin Paige by matching 6-1 scorelines at No. 6 singles.
The Tiffin tandem of Ryan Gase and Alex Thatcher needed to go the distance in the third and fourth positions to get past their Yeomen counterparts of
Ben Echikson and
Nathan Englehart. At No. 3 Echikson dropped the first to Gase, 7-5, before bouncing back with a 6-2 win. However, Gase won the super-breaker 10-3. Englehart took his first set over Thatcher, 6-2, but was then defeated 6-2, 10-5.
The Yeomen are back in action again next Saturday as they welcome national power Case Western to town for another pair of matches.
