Yeowomen Lacrosse Falls to Gators in Overtime

Oberlin, Ohio- Although a terrific performance from junior midfielder, Bette Imhoff, Oberlin women's lacrosse fell to Allegheny 12-11 in overtime on Tuesday evening.

The Yeowomen got on the scoreboard first with an unassisted shot from Imhoff at the 27:36 mark. The Gators responded with three unanswered goals before Imhoff put it in the back of the net again to make the score 3-2, OC still down. Oberlin's defense locked it down over the next ten minutes, allowing only one shot before both teams swapped goals ahead of the half. Allegheny with a one-goal advantage over Oberlin, Kyra Aviles found Imhoff for the equalizer with under two minutes to play. As the clock ran down, the Gators added another goal to make the score 6-5 headed into the second half.

Oberlin won the opening draw of the second half but an unforced turnover led to an Allegheny goal in the early minutes. Freshman attacker Audrey Koren responded on a free-position shot to shrink the Gators' lead to one. The teams swapped goals again before Maya Blevins scored her first career goal to tie the game at the 20:53 mark. Allegheny scored again on a fast-break opportunity but the Imhoff connected with Tess Siciliano to even the score at nine. The Gators and Yeowomen fought back-and-forth for the lead and finally the Gators took an 11-10 lead with six minutes remaining. Looking for the the equalizer, the defensive duo of Rania Ziar and Leah Crowther forced a turnover in to set up a successful transition for the Yeowomen. Just seconds later, a free-position goal from first-year Emily Shimabukuro set the score at 11 apiece and sent the game into overtime.

Although the Yeowomen won the opening draw of overtime, they were unable to convert a pair of shots into a goal and the Gators retook possession. A loose ball by Allegheny caused a scramble inside the Oberlin's eight meter, which set up an open-goal free-position shot for Allegheny. The Gators converted the shot and took the 12-11 victory over the Yeowomen.

Oberlin lacrosse gets back in action on Thursday, April 21 as they play host to Wittenberg. Opening draw is set for 4pm.
