Yeowomen Roll in Conference Opener

Springfield, OH – The winning ways for the Oberlin College women's basketball team continued Saturday afternoon as the Yeowomen opened North Coast Athletic Conference action by earning a 68-53 road win at Wittenberg.

First-year Camille Zinaich led the charge with her first-career double-double, finishing with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Classmate Bryana Woodard added 11 points, while the backcourt duo of Sammy Spanier and Gina Lombard chipped in eight points each.

The Yeowomen defense flustered the Tigers all game long, holding the home side to just 27.6 percent shooting with 16 makes on 58 attempts while recording seven steals and two blocked shots.

Oberlin was down 9-1 in the early going but worked its way back into the contest and trailed by just a single tally after one quarter at 14-13. A triple-hit from Lombard at the 3:37 mark of the second quarter gave the Yeowomen a 28-22 advantage and the lead would only grow from there as Oberlin carried a 33-22 differential into the intermission after holding the Tigers scoreless for the final 6:53 of the half.

After the restart the Yeowomen picked up where they left off, building a 21-point lead midway through the third quarter on a Woodard layup that swelled the margin out to 47-26. Oberlin took a 19-point lead into the fourth quarter and the Tigers would quickly cut the deficit down to 15 but would get no closer than that as the Yeowomen cruised to victory.

Despite cashing in just three of 13 triple-tries, the Yeowomen still shot 46.3 percent from the floor with 25 makes on the 54 shots they hoisted while adding 15 free throws on 20 attempts at the charity stripe for a 75-percent success rate.

The triumph ran the Yeowomen's school-record start out to 6-0 and 1-0 in the NCAC while Wittenberg dropped back to 2-3 and 0-1 in league play.

Oberlin is back in action next Saturday at Hiram College. Tip-time is set for 1 p.m.
