Oberlin, OH – The Oberlin women's basketball team kept their winning streak alive as they took down Muskingum at home on Tuesday evening. The Crimson and Gold were led by the dynamic duo of
Bryana Woodard and
Gina Lombard with 22 and 19 points each. The 70-65 victory moves the Yeowomen to 5-0 on the season ahead of their first conference matchup.
Looking to get off to a strong start, Woodard out in a layup right before Lombard hit her signature three-pointer to open the game. Up early, the Oberlin defense locked in and held the Muskies to just three points in the first six minutes of action. Woodard capitalized off the slow start for the visitors and hit back-to-back jumpers to give the Yeowomen an 18-9 lead after the first quarter.
Muskingum's offense tried to catch fire in the second period, but Oberlin remained strong, letting in only free-throws through the first five minutes. During that time, the Yeowomen doubled up on the Muskies led by a trey from Lombard and buckets from
Jaedyn O'Reilly,
Camille Zinaich, and Woodard. Muskingum tried to find momentum late in the half with consecutive baskets from behind the arc, but Oberlin remained on top as the clocked ticked down for a 35-24 halftime score.
The away team opened the scoring as the third quarter got underway, but
Alyson Jefferson drove to the rim for a layup to keep the 11-point lead. A pair of shots from the Muskies brought the score within nine with 7:10 remaining. The two teams went bucket-for-bucket down the line, with Muskingum coming as close as six in the final minute. Woodard responded with her 15
th point of the evening to keep Oberlin's comfortable lead at 52-44.
Oberlin came off the benches with gusto as
Maggie Balderstone drove to rim and put up a reverse layup in the opening seconds of the final quarter. Lombard kept the momentum rolling with another three-pointer as the Yeowomen took a 13-point lead. Midway through the quarter,
Kendal McCall got back in the game with a jump shot before Zinaich scored again to extend the lead to 14 with 4:30 to go. The Muskies never got much closer to the Yeowomen as the home court defense shut down their guests over the final two minutes to secure the win.
The Yeowomen take a short break for the Thanksgiving holiday but return to the court again on Saturday, November 27 to open North Coast Athletic Conference action against Wittenberg. The away game is set to start at 4pm with the live stream available
