Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team jumped all over the visiting Geneva College Tornadoes right from the opening tip and never looked back en route to a 99-49 victory on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gym.
The Oberlin offense was cooking as 12 different players posted points in the win that featured 29 assists on 38 made baskets.
Bryana Woodard led the way with 20 points to go along with six assists and five rebounds. Senior
Sammy Spanier added 18 points and a game-high seven assists, while
Alyson Jefferson registered her first-career double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Jaedyn O'Reilly added 10 off the bench, while first-year
Camille Zinaich stuffed the stat sheet with 14 rebounds, six assists, and two steals to accompany her seven points.
After trailing 7-4 in the early going, the Yeowomen offense came to life, using a 11-0 run that was capped off by a fastbreak layup from Spanier at the 5:53 mark to claim a 15-7 advantage. A finish inside from Zinaich gave Oberlin its first double-digit lead of the game at 22-11 and the Yeowomen would ultimately finish the opening stanza with a 30-17 cushion after shooting 60-percent (12-of-20) in the frame.
The margin would continue to swell throughout the second quarter as a steal from
Gina Lombard led to an easy leak-out layup by Spanier that ballooned the lead out to 30, 58-28, with just under three minutes left in the first half. The Yeowomen wouldn't call off the dogs from there as they carried a 67-39 lead into the intermission.
With the final outcome never in doubt the two foes played out the string with Oberlin eventually building a 50-point lead with 8:33 left in the fourth quarter and later led by as many as 52.
Oberlin turned 19 Geneva turnovers in 24 points and finished with 23 fastbreak points in the win. The Yeowomen also outscored the Golden Tornadoes 52-18 in the paint and earned 23 second-chance points as 21 of their 67 rebounds were on the offensive end. Furthermore, Oberlin's bench bunch outscored its counterparts 29-18.
The Yeowomen, who remain unblemished at 4-0, shot 48.7 percent (38-of-78) from the floor while holding Geneva to 22.7 percent (17-of-75).
Oberlin will conclude its three-game homestand on Tuesday night with a 7 p.m. non-conference clash against Muskingum.
