Oberlin, OH – For the first time in program history, the Yeowomen basketball team start the season 3-0. On the way to such a feat, the young squad took down the Adrian Bulldogs 82-64 in Philips. The largest win of the season keeps Oberlin undefeated with an overall record of 3-0.
The Yeowomen dominated the first quarter of action, outscoring the Bulldogs 28-14 and 66.7% from the field.
Sammy Spanier had the hot hands on the court, knocking down back-to-back threes in the early minutes. Sharp-shooter
Gina Lombard got in the action as well with seven points and three assists.
The momentum continued into the second quarter as jumper from
Bryana Woodard put Oberlin up 30-14. The Crimson and Gold defense locked down the Bulldogs until the 6:22 mark when Adrian scored their first points from the field. Draining her third three-pointer of the night, Spainer gave the Yeowomen their largest lead of the game at 20 points. As the half came to a close,
Camille Zinaich and
Alyson Jefferson each scored a pair of jumpers to put the home team ahead 45-27.
Using the halftime to regroup, Adrian came out with fire in the second half, putting up five points before a Woodard layup ended the drought. The Bulldogs slowly worked their way back into the game until Spanier hit another three-point to deflate the visitors. Within the final minutes, Adrian went on another short run to bring the game within nine, but still down, 56-45.
Wasting no time to regain control of the game, senior
Mia Woo knocked down a three-pointer on the first shot of the fourth quarter. Lombard followed her up with another basket behind the arc to give Oberlin a 64-49 lead. The Bulldogs never got much closer as Woo hit another three at the 6:15 mark. The threes kept coming in the late minutes of the game with another bucket from Jefferson. The leading scorer closed out the game with another layup to secure the 82-64 victory for the Yeowomen.
In win, both Woodard and Zinaich came close to double-doubles as Woodard dropped 15 points and nine rebounds, while Zinaich pulled in a team-high 13 rebounds and nine points. Senior Spanier had a career night with 14 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. The eight rebounds are a new career-high while the six assists tie her career-high from early in the 2019 season.
