Swimming & Diving Opens Season Against Mount Union

Oberlin, OH - The Oberlin College swimming and diving teams opened their 2021-22 season on Saturday, hosting Mount Union at Carr Pool. The Yeowomen were victorious 190-97 while the Yeomen fell to the Purple Raiders, 197-77.

The meet started with the Yeowomen winning the 200-yard medley relay as newcomers Ava Peyton, Skye Slade, Isabel Pfaff, and Ellie Frost posted a winning time of 1:54.91. Shortly thereafter, Peyton and Frost would also add individual wins as Peyton claimed the top spot in the 100-yard back in 1:02.47 while Frost followed with a winning time of 25.66 in the 50-yard free. Peyton later returned to win the 100-yard fly in 1:02.32. 

After an impressive virtual season last year, Hannah Hale picked up where she left, winning the 200-yard free by nearly two full seconds with a mark of 2:02.97. After the first diving break, Hale returned to win the 100-yard free in 55.35 while Frost was second in 56.88. A third victory from Hale would come in dramatic fashion as she narrowly out-touched Ziv Marco to win the 500-yard free 5:32.22 to 5:32.46. 

First-year Ava Schigur added a win in the 200-yard fly, tapping the wall at the 2:27.89 mark. Fellow newcomer Bella Sites registered a four-second victory in the 200-yard back with a time of 2:17.08 and added wins in the 1,000-yard free (11:24.06) and 200-yard IM (2:19.35).

Sophie Schnake won the 1-meter diving event with 175.50 points and went uncontested in the 3-meter event. 

The meet ended with Hale, Frost, Peyton, and Sites posting the winning time of 1:43.00 in the 200-yard free relay. 

Rookie Isaac Viviano picked up the first win of the season for the Yeomen, clocking in at 10:23.24 in the 1,000-yard free. The Plainwell, Michigan, product added a second victory in the 200-yard with an impressive timestamp of 2:14.67. 

Before the first diving dreak, Dylan Bechtold added a second-place finish in the 200-yard free with a mark of 1:49.08 and later picked up his first collegiate win with a time of 5:03.16 in the 500-yard free.

In the 100-yard breast, senior captain Jonathan Hupfeld added a second-place showing in 1:02.98 and would later finish in the same position in the 200-yard breast with a time of 2:20.21. His string of runner-up finishes continued in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:08.96.

Rookie Erik Fendorf contributed a second-place effort in the 100-yard free in 49.58 

The swimming and diving teams return to action on November 5 in a double-dual against Division I Cleveland State and University of Findlay.
