Oberlin, OH – The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team scored six straight goals to take an 8-6 lead in the fourth quarter but Otterbein would score the last three of the game to escape Dick Bailey Field with a 9-8 victory on Wednesday night.
Tom Decker and
Thomas Berle Carman each scored a pair for the Yeomen while
Calvin Filson made 11 saves in the cage.
Otterbein jumped out to a 3-0 lead 10 minutes into the game before
Regan Chasney found
Griffin Cappelletti at the 3:16 mark to get Oberlin on the board. The Cardinals would respond less than a minute later to give Otterbein a 4-1 lead after 15 minutes of play.
The Cardinals scored the first of goal of the second stanza as well thanks to an extra-man opportunity but this time the Yeomen answered quickly as
Max Cha set up Decker for his 12th goal of the year to make it a 5-2 game with 7:02 left in half.
The two teams traded goals before the break as a
Ryan Blasberg marker with 2:12 left pulled the Yeomen with three, 6-3, at the break.
Decker added his second tally of the game off a rebound 2:30 into the frame which was quickly followed by a Carman marker 56 seconds later to trim the deficit to one, 6-5. After two goals in the first 3:40 of the period, the teams played a relatively quiet third quarter as Otterbein held onto a slim 6-5 advantage heading to the fourth.
Oberlin would score the first two goals of the final quarter as well as
Devlin O'Keefe tied the game at the 13:39 mark before
Alex Dovichi gave the Yeomen their first lead of the night 1:43 later.
Berle Carman made it six unanswered Oberlin goals with 8:50 left in the game to give the Yeomen a slight 8-6 cushion.
The Cardinals finally ended their 27:34 scoreless draught with a tally at the 5:10 mark to cut the deficit to one, 8-7, before eventually tying it up with an unassisted goal with 1:50 to go in the game.
Otterbein won the ensuing faceoff and made it count as it scored the game-winning goal with 33 seconds remaining before icing the game by winning the following draw.
Although the Yeomen outshot the Cardinals 45-29, Otterbein won four more faceoffs (12-8) than Oberlin which turned out to be the difference.
Oberlin heads to Mount Union on Saturday, March 14th for a 1:00 p.m. match
