Springfield, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team didn't have enough firepower to stay with the top-seed and No. 4 nationally ranked Tigers of Wittenberg, falling 67-47 on Friday night in the North Coast Athletic Conference Semifinals.
The soft rims in Pam Evans Smith Arena were unkind to the Yeomen as they shot just 33.3 percent (18-of-54) from the floor, which included a subpar 4-of-29 (13.8%) showing from beyond the arc.
Playing in his final game, senior Christian Fioretti led Oberlin with 11 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Classmate Charles Tiedemann added 10 points on an efficient 5-of-7 shooting
The Tigers led 16-6 with 11:51 left to play in the opening half but a 7-0 Yeomen spurt trimmed the lead down to three just past the midway point of the session. The Wittenberg advantage would increase back up to eight and the Yeomen couldn't shrink the margin, hitting on just one of 13 triple-tries in the half as the Tigers ultimately carried a 30-22 cushion into the intermission.
Oberlin went over six minutes into the second half without a point until a pair of technical free throws by Joshua Friedkin finally stopped the drought. The Yeomen continued to fight, cutting the differential down to 10 on a Friedkin 3-pointer before Fioretti made it 44-36 on a turnaround jumper at the 10:18 mark.
However, the Tigers short-circuited the threat in a hurry, answering back with 16 straight points to leave no doubt in the final outcome.
James Johnson led the Tigers with 22 points in the win. As a team they shot 42.3 percent from the floor, hitting on 22 of the 52 shots they hoisted. Wittenberg also cashed in 18 free throws on 25 attempts (72%) compared to the Yeomen's 7-of-11 (63.6%) showing.
Oberlin ends its season one win shy of tying the school record for victories in a season at 15-12, marking the program's first winning season since the 1991-92 campaign.
The Yeomen will bid farewell to its six senior members and look to build off its successful year in the 2020-21 season.
