Oberlin, OH – The Oberlin College women's lacrosse team trailed Hope College 13-9 with 8:36 left to play before rattling off five straight goals, including
Bette Imhoff's game-winner as time expired to complete the 14-13 come from behind win on Saturday afternoon at Dick Bailey Field.
Imhoff led the Yeowomen with five goals while adding seven ground balls and causing six turnovers.
Tess Siciliano added three goals of her own with two coming off free positions.
Ali Wessel started off the scoring with the first Oberlin goal of the 2020 season less than a minute into the game on an assist from
Kyra Aviles but Hope would counter with six consecutive goals to pull ahead 6-1 halfway through the opening half.
The Yeowomen countered with three straight goals from Wessel, Imhoff and
Annie Payne to cut the deficit to two before the Flying Dutch answered with four of their own to head to the break up 10-4.
Imhoff scored her second of the contest on a free position just under two minutes into the second half before back-to-back goals by Siciliano and
Leah Crowther, the former on a woman-up situation, trimmed the margin to four, 11-7, at the 25:09 mark.
Hope stopped the run at 12-7 but the Yeowomen would not go away as tallies from Imhoff and Siciliano, the latter coming via a free position, pulled Oberlin to within three, 12-9, with 18:14 remaining in the game.
After a scoreless stretch of nearly 10 minutes, the Flying Dutch scored on a woman-up opportunity of their own with 8:36 left to play to hold a four-goal edge 13-9.
Payne would start the comeback effort with an even-strength goal a minute later but Oberlin still trailed by three with 2:49 to go until Siciliano netted her third of the game to shrink the deficit to two at 13-11.
Seconds later, the Yeowomen would hurt their comeback attempt with a yellow card penalty but they remained unfazed as Imhoff and
Eliza Amber scored a pair of woman-down goals in a span of 13 seconds to knot the game up with 58 ticks left in regulation.
Hope would win the ensuing draw control but could not capitalize as it shot one wide of the cage before a costly turnover set up Oberlin for the game-winner with 41 seconds left on the clock. With time winding down
Ellie Jensen found Imhoff slashing to the net and her shot beat the Flying Dutch goalie as time expired for the dramatic 14-13 come from behind victory.
Oberlin outshot Hope 42-26 including 25-12 in the second half while also committing eight less turnovers than the Flying Dutch.
