Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team celebrated Senior Day in grand fashion, knocking off the visiting Wittenberg University Tigers 71-54 on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gym.
Following the game, the Yeowomen honored their six senior members in a combined ceremony with the men's program.
Playing in their final home game, the Oberlin senior class certainly left their mark as
Cheyenne Arthur poured in 17 points, while classmate
Jasmine Sorrells notched her 10th double-double of the season with 16 points and a season-high 16 rebounds. Fellow senior
Mackenzie Michaels dropped in a career-high 10 points, while
Maggie Gross,
Ally Driscoll, and
Nichole Geist each finished with four points.
Oberlin twice led by five in a tightly-contested first quarter and would take a 19-16 lead into the second quarter as Arthur ended the opening frame with one of her five triple-hits in the game.
The Yeowomen started the second quarter with a 10-3 run to claim a 29-19 advantage with 6:20 left in the half. The spurt featured four points from Gross and another long-range connection by Arthur.
Oberlin continued to stay hot throughout the quarter as yet another 3-pointer from Arthur swelled the margin out 14 before the Yeowomen ultimately settled for a 39-27 lead at the break.
The Tigers cut the deficit down to nine, 40-31, with 8:17 left in the third but the Yeowomen quickly pushed the gap back out to 15 before extending it to 19, 57-38, on a pair of
Jai Cunningham free throws.
A put-back layup by Michaels with 5:05 remaining in the game pushed the lead over 20 and the Tigers would never threaten the rest of the way.
Oberlin shot 48 percent (24-of-50) from the floor, which included an 8-of-16 showing from beyond the arc. OC also cashed in 15-of-20 charity tosses for 75 % percent clip. The Yeowomen finished with a 39-29 advantage on the glass and saw their bench bunch outscore its Wittenberg counterparts, 26-8.
The Yeowomen conclude the regular season at 9-16 overall and 6-10 in the NCAC. Wittenberg dropped back to 18-7 and 11-5 with the loss.
The sixth-seeded Yeowomen will look to have a repeat performance against the Tigers on Tuesday night in Springfield, Ohio as they will go toe-to-toe once again in the opening round of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.
