Springfield, OH – The Oberlin College women's basketball team's 2019-2020 season came to an end on Tuesday night with a 46-36 loss to the Wittenberg Tigers in a North Coast Athletic Conference Quarterfinal contest.
It seemed as though the baskets had lids on them for most of the evening as the 6-seeded Yeowomen shot just 25.9% from the field while the 3-seeded Tigers were slightly better at 26.5%. To make matters worse, the opponents combined for just one made 3-pointer as Oberlin was 1-of-9 (11.1%) from beyond the arc while Wittenberg put up a donut, going 0-9.
It was an abysmal opening quarter as each team struggled to get things going with Wittenberg grasping a quiet 8-4 lead after 10 minutes of play.
A pair of
Mackenzie Michaels made free throws kept Oberlin within five, 15-10, at the 4:23 mark of the second quarter before she added a layup a couple of minutes later to trim the deficit to one, 17-16, as Wittenberg led 19-16 at the break.
The third quarter is where the game started to get away from the Yeowomen as they mustered just two points in the frame on their way to being outscored 14-2 and trailed 33-18 heading to the fourth.
A
Jasmine Sorrells jumper just over halfway through the stanza cut the margin to 10, 37-27, before a make from
Cheyenne Arthur pulled the Yeowomen within eight, 39-31, with 3:42 remaining in the game.
Oberlin possessed the ball down 42-34 with 1:18 left to go, but after a missed 3-pointer, the Yeowomen were unable to convert on a put back layup and Wittenberg made their freebies to stave off the Yeowomen by 10.
Arthur and Sorrells combined for 14 points in their last game in the crimson and gold with the main difference between the two teams coming in points off turnovers as Wittenberg scored 14 on 23 Oberlin giveaways while the Yeowomen managed just four points on 20 Tiger giveaways.
Head Coach
Stephany Dunmyer and the returning Yeowomen will get to work this offseason as they finish her first season at the helm with a 9-17 mark and 6-10 NCAC record.
