Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team honored its six senior members prior to tip-off but the visiting Wabash College Little Giants would damper the celebration as they cruised to a 76-54 win over the Yeomen on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gym.
Senior Christian Fioretti led all scorers, finishing four points shy of 1,000 for his career as he posted 13 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Classmate Charles Tiedemann added 11 points and matched Andre Campbell, who had eight points, with five rebounds. Wolf Moser also added eight points off the Yeomen bench.
Oberlin trailed by just six, 21-15, midway through the opening half but an 18-2 Wabash barrage broke the game wide open as the Little Giants ballooned their lead out to 39-17 with 2:20 left in the session before ultimately carrying a 44-21 cushion into the intermission.
The Yeomen would outscore the Little Giants 33-32 in the second half but the halftime deficit was too much to overcome to have any factor on the eventual result. A Tiedemann layup at the 9:12 mark had Oberlin with 16 at 57-41 but the Yeomen would get no closer the rest of the way.
Oberlin shot a subpar 32.3 percent (21-of-65) from the floor, which included the second-straight game where it went 6-of-29 (20.7%) from 3-point land. The Little Giants had just a 36.7 percent (22-of-60) success rate but they cashed in 21-of-22 free throws for a 95.5 percent clip. The Yeomen deposited six of their eight freebies in the loss.
Evan Suppa and Abe Kuhn got the senior day start for the Yeomen with Kuhn finishing 2-for-4 with four points, while Suppa ripped down 13 rebounds.
The Yeomen, who were locked into the No. 5 seed of the NCAC Tournament prior to tip-off, finished the regular season 14-11 overall and 8-10 in conference action. Wabash heads into the postseason at 17-8 and 13-5 in league play.
Oberlin travels to fourth-seeded DePauw to take on the Tigers on Tuesday night at 8 p.m.
