Yeowomen Fall to Wooster

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team suffered a 57-41 defeat to the visiting College of Wooster Fighting Scots on Wednesday night at Philips Gym.

Sophomore Sammy Spanier led all scorers with 14 points, hitting on 7-of-14 attempts while also corralling seven rebounds. Senior post players Maggie Gross and Jasmine Sorrells each added eight points while classmate Cheyenne Arthur chipped in with seven.

Oberlin trailed 10-4 after the opening quarter but would outscore Wooster 11-10 in the second session to trail 20-15 at the break.

After going down by seven early in the third quarter, a 10-3 Yeowomen spurt tied the game at 25-25 and moments later a triple-hit from Arthur gave Oberlin its first lead of the game at 28-27 at the 4:23 mark. Unfortunately, the Yeowomen would go cold for the remainder of the period as the Scots answered back with a 14-0 response run that carried into the fourth quarter as they grabbed a 41-28 lead.

The Yeowomen were never able to threaten the ultimate outcome in the final frame as the Scots posted 20 points in the quarter to finish off the victory.

The Yeowomen shot 39.6 percent in the loss, hitting on 19 of their 48 attempts while the Scots finished slightly better at 40.8 percent (20-of-49) from the floor but benefited from a 9-of-11 showing at the free-throw line, while Oberlin went just 1-2 at the stripe.

Oberlin finish with a 32-26 rebounding advantage but the Scots' bench bunch outscored its Yeowomen counterparts 24-1.

The loss dropped Oberlin back to 8-16 overall and 5-10 in the NCAC. Wooster moved to 7-17 and 3-12 in conference play.

The Yeowomen will honor their six seniors and closeout the regular season on Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. tilt against Wittenberg.
