Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 win over the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops on Wednesday night at the John W. Heisman Field House.
The tightest bout of the evening came at No. 1 doubles but the duo of
Camron Cohen and
Sean Billerbeck was able to hold off Ryan Simon and Ben Stein, 8-6.
James Dill and
Zachary Vaughn doubled up Billy Lewis and Alex Riess 8-4 at No. 3, while
Elliot Nuss and
Stephen Gruppuso were 8-2 victors in the second slot.
Gruppuso, a senior from Bayport, New York, picked up his 49th-career singles win as he dispatched Stein by matching 6-1 counts in the top flight.
Cohen dropped just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 thumping of Simon at No. 2 to register his first dual-match singles victory of the year.
Miller Buckholz was no contest for Vaughn as the Oberlin senior set him aside by identical 6-1 scores.
Rookie
Sean Billerbeck notched his team-leading eighth win of the season as he dispatched Omar Santiagonunez 6-1, 6-1 in the fourth flight.
Nuss took care of Riess 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 while
Sam Topper made short work of Billy Lewis at No. 6, winning 6-1, 6-0.
The Yeomen and Bishops are now both 2-4 on the young season.
Oberlin is back in action on Friday, February 29 when it welcomes the University of Rochester for a 3 p.m. tilt.
