Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's tennis team finished on the wrong end of a 5-4 decision against the visiting Tiffin University Dragons on Saturday morning at the John W. Heisman Field House.
The Yeomen's number three pairing of
James Dill and
Zachary Vaughn earned an 8-3 win over Austin Mohamedali and Matthew Telford, but the top two bouts featured some tough luck for the Yeomen as they each lost in a tiebreak with the top flight falling 8-7 (7-4) and the second unit succumbing to an 8-7 (11-9) defeat.
The Dragons carried a 2-1 lead into singles and the lead quickly increased as
Camron Cohen was dispatched at No. 2 by Michael Gurtner.
Despite the match still being in the balance, the No. 1 flight went to a super-break as
Stephen Gruppuso rebounded nicely after a 1-6 loss in the first to Nikita Parfenov. The Yeomen ace would prevail 6-4 in the second before outlasting him 10-8 in the third.
Unfortunately, the bounces didn't go the Yeomen's way in the fourth position as Hugo Chatras outlasted Dill 6-3, 4-6, 12-10 before Telford delivered the match-clinching point with a 7-5, 6-3 triumph over Vaughn.
The bottom part of the Yeomen lineup went on to handle the Dragons as
Elliot Nuss was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Gabriel de Oliveira at No. 5 and freshman
Sean Billerbeck set aside Tom Blaquiere by matching 6-2 counts in the sixth position.
The Yeomen will be back in action on Wednesday as they host NCAC East foe Ohio Wesleyan at 5:30 p.m.
