Cleveland, Ohio – The high-powered Spartans of Case Western Reserve University proved to be too much for the Oberlin College men's tennis team to handle as they took down the Yeomen, 9-0, on Friday night at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.
The 12th ranked Spartans feature the No. 1 ranked doubles pairing in the country in Matt Chen and James Hopper, who also each rank nationally in singles. The Yeomen duo of
Camron Cohen and
Sean Billerbeck put up a fight in the top bout against the Spartans tandem but ultimately fell by an 8-3 count.
Stephen Gruppuso and
Elliot Nuss had the closest decision in the second position before succumbing 8-5 to Jon Powell and Neil Mabee, while the Yeomen were dispatched 8-1 at No. 3.
Chen, who is ranked 22nd in the country, took down Gruppuso by matching 6-2 counts in the first singles slot.
Cohen and Aaron Umen needed three sets to decide a winner at No. 2. Umen cruised in the first 6-1, but Cohen bounced back with a 7-5 triumph in the second before falling 10-5 in the super-breaker.
The Yeomen managed just two combined points in the first sets of the matches being contested in the third through six flights. However, the Yeomen did challenge in the second sets in the fifth and sixth positions.
At No. 5, Billerbeck forced Max Vicario to stave him off 7-5 in the second after winning the first 6-1. The same went for
Ben Echikson against Diego Maza as he too fell 7-5 in the second after being blanked in the first.
The Yeomen have an extremely short turnaround as they go right back to work tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. hosting Division II Tiffin at the John W. Heisman Field House.
