Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team had four Yeowomen score in double figures on their way to a 71-64 victory over the Battling Bishops on Wednesday night.
Sammy Spanier was the game-high scorer as she had a career best 20 points while
Cheyenne Arthur added 16 by going 11-of-12 from the charity stripe. The Yeowomen recorded a pair of double-doubles in the post as
Jasmine Sorrells had 14 points and 10 rebounds to accompany her six blocked shots, and
Maggie Gross added 12 points and 14 boards.
Oberlin opened the game on a 13-3 run before Ohio Wesleyan cut the deficit to six, 19-13, after the first quarter of play.
A Spanier runner pushed the lead back to double digits, 25-13, at the 7:52 mark of the second but the Battling Bishops responded with a 13-4 run to pull within three, 29-26, as two minutes remained until halftime. The sophomore Spanier would close the half with four straight points for the Yeowomen to send her team to the locker room up 33-26.
Arthur got to the foul line in back-to-back possessions in the third period, making all four free throws, to give Oberlin a 43-30 advantage with 3:40 left in the quarter. The two teams would trade buckets the rest of way to put the Yeowomen up 51-39 heading to the fourth.
Ohio Wesleyan cut the margin in half, 55-49, just over four minutes into the frame but
Ally Driscoll made a timely 3-pointer to push the lead back to 10, 62-52, with 4:06 left in the contest.
A pair of made free throws got the Battling Bishops as close as five, 69-64, but only 26 seconds remained in the game as the Yeowomen led from start to finish on their way to improving to 2-2 in North Coast Athletic Conference play.
Oberlin won the battle in the paint, outscoring Ohio Wesleyan 34-24, while registering 15 second chance points compared to the Battling Bishops two. On the defensive end, the Yeowomen were stingy all night long as they forced 20 Battling Bishop turnovers.
The Yeowomen hit the road on Saturday, January 11
th when they head to Wittenberg for a 1:00 p.m. tip.
