Big Red Bests Yeowomen 72-54

Granville, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team was tied with Denison at the half before the Big Red pulled away in the second to drop the Yeowomen 72-54 on Saturday afternoon.
 
Cheyenne Arthur led the way with 12 points and five assists while Ally Driscoll added 11. Jasmine Sorrells was also in double digits with 10 points to go along with six rebounds.
 
A Maggie Gross jumper in the paint gave the Yeowomen an 11-8 lead at the 3:50 mark of the opening quarter but the Big Red answered back to make it a 15-15 game after 10 minutes of play.
 
Back-to-back makes from Sorrells put Oberlin ahead 19-15 in the beginning of the second before Denison regained the lead with a triple, 21-20, with 4:47 left in the half. Both teams would trade buckets for the remainder of the quarter, sending them to the break tied at 29-29.
 
With the score tied at 31-31 early in the third, the Big Red went on an 11-0 run to open up a 42-31 advantage halfway through the quarter. Leo Ross ended the stretch with a three but Denison would hold firm as they led 49-38 heading to the fourth.
 
A pair of Sammy Spanier free throws cut the margin to single digits, 49-40, early in the quarter before the Big Red responded with a 10-0 run to balloon the advantage to 19, 59-40, with 5:33 left in the game.
 
Denison would push the lead to as much as 22, 65-43, on its way to closing out Oberlin 72-54 to drop the Yeowomen to 1-2 in conference play.
 
The Big Red's hot shooting proved too much for the Yeowomen as the held the advantage in both field goal percentage (47.2%-39.6%) and three-point percentage (50%-38.5%) thanks to a strong second half.
 
Oberlin will next welcome Ohio Wesleyan to Philips Gym on Wednesday, January 8th for a 6:00 p.m. conference contest.
