Meadville, PA – The Oberlin College women's basketball team trailed 8-6 in the early going before taking the lead after one quarter of play and never looking back as they controlled the course of play in a 52-42 win at Allegheny College on Wednesday night.
Senior
Cheyenne Arthur's 16 point effort on 6-of-10 shooting led the Yeowomen and was tied for the game-high with Julianna Skowron of Allegheny.
Jasmine Sorrells was the only other Oberlin scorer in double digits with 10 points as nine different Yeowoman registered points in the victory.
Trailing 8-6 with 3:34 left in the opening quarter, Oberlin went on an 8-0 run, closing the period with buckets from
Jai Cunningham, Arthur,
Maggie Gross and Sorrells to take a 14-8 lead after 10 minutes of play.
Allegheny trimmed the deficit to one, 14-13, to start the second quarter before a Sorrells layup sparked a 14-3 stretch over 5:34 to send Oberlin to the locker room up 28-16.
An
Ally Driscoll layup at the 6:33 mark of the third quarter gave the Yeowomen their biggest lead of the night at 35-20 but the Gators would cut the deficit to single digits, 42-33, with 2:02 left in the frame. Oberlin responded to close the quarter on a 7-0 run, due in part to five points from Arthur, to hold a commanding 47-33 advantage heading to the fourth.
The Gators fought back though as a 6-0 spurt to start the final quarter pulled them within eight, 47-39, with 3:42 to go before a backbreaking 3-pointer from Arthur stopped the run and sealed a 52-42 road win for the Yeowomen.
The stifling Oberlin defense held Allegheny to just 29.3% from the field including 25% from beyond the arc while also forcing 23 Gators turnovers.
The Yeowomen offense played to their strengths as well as they outscored the Gators 32-20 in the paint and 17-1 in bench points.
With the bye weekend in North Coast Athletic Conference play coming up for Oberlin, it heads to Thiel on Friday, January 24 for a 7:00 p.m. tip with the Tomcats.
