Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team dominated the paint on its way to dispatching Hiram 74-62 on Saturday afternoon inside Philips Gym.
Jasmine Sorrells recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 25 points and 13 rebounds on 11-of-17 shooting to lead the Oberlin offense.
Maggie Gross added a season-high 14 points to go along with seven boards while
Cheyenne Arthur dished out seven dimes and chipped in nine points for the Yeowomen.
Both teams got off to a slow start as a Sorrells layup at the 4:36 mark of the opening quarter gave Oberlin a 8-3 lead.
Mackenzie Michaels would knock down a jumper in the final minute, followed by a pair of
Jai Cunningham free throws to give the Yeowomen an 18-11 advantage heading to the second quarter.
A 7-2 stretch by the Terriers to start the quarter trimmed the deficit to two, 20-18, after four minutes of play before a
Leo Ross three halted the Hiram run. The Terriers would counter with a triple of their own to make it a one-point game, 25-24, with 4:23 remaining until halftime but another 3-pointer from Ross put the Yeowomen ahead 28-24.
A Gross layup and
Ally Driscoll triple pushed the margin back to six, 33-26, with just over two minutes left until halftime but Hiram answered with a three of their own, which paired with a couple throws cut the Oberlin advantage to four, 35-31, at the break.
A Sorrells jumper at the 2:49 mark of the third quarter capped off a 12-3 Yeowomen run that stretched the lead to 47-34 as the Terriers scored just eight points in the frame and trailed 55-39 heading to the final quarter.
A pair of Sorrells layups ballooned the margin to 20, 59-39, less than two minutes into the fourth as the lead grew as high as 24, 63-39, at the 7:18 mark.
The Terriers did not go quietly though as a 3-point play by Tashauna Wright, who scored a game-high 29 points, punctuated a 13-0 run that slashed the Yeowomen advantage to 63-52 with 4:00 minutes remaining.
Oberlin would get to the free throw line on its next two possessions, making all four attempts, to stop the Hiram momentum before a
Mia Woo layup with just over a minute left capped off a 74-62 Yeowomen win.
The Yeowomen outshot the Terriers 43.1-31.7% thanks in part to winning the battle in the paint 42-18 and outrebounding Hiram 45-35.
Oberlin hits the road on Wednesday, January 22 when it squares off with Allegheny at 6:00 p.m.
