Wooster, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team held a seven-point advantage at the half before the Fighting Scots erased the deficit with a 54-point second half to drop the Yeowomen 85-75 on Wednesday night.
Jasmine Sorrells led the Oberlin attack with 21 points on 10-of-14 shooting.
Cheyenne Arthur and
Sammy Spanier also scored in double figures for the Yeowomen with 15 and 13 points, respectively.
The teams traded points for most of the first quarter before Spanier scored Oberlin's last six points of the opening frame to give her team an 18-15 lead after 10 minutes of play.
Five consecutive points by
Rowan Smith broke a 23-23 tie and put the Yeowomen ahead at the 6:05 mark of the second quarter before another Spanier jumper gave Oberlin a 36-27 advantage with 3:23 remaining until halftime.
Both offensives would cool down in the last couple minutes of the quarter sending Oberlin to the break up 38-31.
A Fighting Scots triple trimmed the margin to three, 44-41, at the 6:38 mark of the third quarter but the Yeowomen responded with makes from Arthur and
Maggie Gross to hold the lead at six. A Spanier three pushed the advantage back to nine, 52-43, with 4:05 to go in the frame but Wooster answered by closing the quarter on a 15-8 run to cut the deficit to two, 60-58, heading to the fourth.
The Fighting Scots kept up the pressure to begin the quarter as they scored seven of the first nine points to take a 65-62 lead just over two minutes into the frame. Sorrells stopped the run with a layup before the Yeowomen regained the lead, 66-65, on a jumper from Smith.
Wooster responded again, this time with a 7-0 run, to take a 72-66 advantage with 3:29 left in the contest but Oberlin would hang around as another layup from Sorrells kept the Yeowomen within striking distance at 76-70.
Unfortunately, only 1:33 remained in the game and the Fighting Scots made all nine of their free throws down the stretch to secure the 85-75 comeback win.
Oberlin outshot Wooster 49.1%-36.8% from the floor in the game but the Fighting Scots went 11-of-24 (45.8%) from the field in the second half and 5-of-10 from long range on their way to a 54-point half.
The Fighting Scots also held a sizable advantage at the charity stripe as they went 36-of-47 (76.6%) from the line, including 27-of-34 in the second half, as the Yeowomen shot just 22 attempts total for the game.
Oberlin returns home on Saturday, January 18 when it host Hiram at 1:00 p.m.
