Crawfordsville, IN – The Oberlin College men's basketball team didn't have enough firepower to stay with the Wabash College Little Giants as they suffered an 81-61 defeat on Saturday afternoon at Chadwick Court.
Joshua Friedkin led the Yeomen scoring attack with 14 points while Andre Campbell chipped in with 10 points in the loss. Isaac Finestone contributed eight points on 3-of-6 shooting, while Wolf Moser finished with seven.
A Jordan Armstrong layup with 13:17 left in the opening half gave the Yeomen a 13-11 cushion, but a 9-0 Wabash response run over the next 2:17 gave the home side a 20-13 advantage. A pair of Jack Davidson charity tosses provided the Little Giants their first double-digit lead of the game at 26-16 with 6:20 left on the first-half clock.
Oberlin wouldn't go away quietly as back-to-back triple-hits from Friedkin and Finestone shrunk the deficit down to 28-26. In the final minutes of the session, a Moser 3-pointer off a Christian Fioretti feed had the Yeomen within one, 32-31, but Wabash would close the session on a 9-2 spurt to carry a 40-33 cushion into the intermission.
Unfortunately for the Yeomen, the Little Giants' barrage would continue well into the second half as they scored 16 of the first 20 points of the session to swell the margin to 56-37 with 13:03 left to play in the game.
Just one game removed from an epic comeback victory, the Yeomen were hoping to do the same but it never came to fruition. Another long-range strike from Moser had the gap down to 13, 57-44, with 11:17 still to expire but the Yeomen would get no closer the rest of the way as Wabash pushed the lead out 72-52 at the 6:45 mark and never looked back.
The Yeomen shot a subpar 33.9 percent (19-of-56) from the floor, which included an 8-of-26 (30.8 %) showing from 3-point land. In a game that was called extremely tight, the Yeomen also did themselves no favors at the free-throw line where they went 15-of-22 for a 68.2 percent clip.
Wabash checked in at 50 percent shooting with 25 makes on 50 attempts. The Little Giants also took 30 free throws due to 24 Yeomen fouls – making 21 freebies for a 70 percent clip.
The loss dropped Oberlin back to 8-5 overall and 2-4 in the NCAC. Wabash improved to 8-5 and 4-2 in league play.
Oberlin will travel to No. 24 Wooster on Wednesday night to battle the Scots at 8 p.m.
