Spartans Spoil Senior Day for Yeowomen

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team tied the match at a set apiece before falling in four to Case Western Reserve University on Senior Day inside the Philips Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

With the score tied at 5-5 in the first set, three straight attack errors by the Yeowomen gave the Spartans an 8-5 lead. A Zoe Kuzbari service ace kept the deficit at three, 12-9, before a 3-0 run doubled the Case Western advantage to six at 15-9. A Maura Gibbs kill trimmed the margin to two at 18-16 but the Spartans had a hold of the first set, leading 22-18 in the latter stages. A pair of Spartans attack errors chopped the lead in half but they held on by capturing five of the last seven points to win the set 25-22.

In the second set, another kill by Gibbs tied the score at 9-9. The Yeowomen built off that momentum as a 7-2 run, capped off by a pair of kills from Iyanna Lewis and Emery Beacom, opened up a five-point lead at 16-11. Case Western attack errors stretched the Oberlin lead to seven at 19-12 but the Spartans fought back with five straight points of their own to cut the deficit to two at 19-17 and force a Yeowomen timeout. Natasha Radic and Beacom responded with kills out of the timeout to fend off the Spartans for a 25-19 set victory to tie the match up at 1-1.

Another Gibbs kill gave Oberlin a 9-6 advantage early in the third set but Case Western took over with an 11-1 run to take a commanding 17-10 lead. Samantha Lam set up Lewis and Radic to halt the run but six straight points by the Spartans ballooned the score to 23-12. A Lewis kill would again break the streak but two kills for Case Western closed out the set and gave the visitors the lead in the match.

A Kira Widran kill put the Yeowomen ahead by one at 10-9 in the fourth set before a Beacom kill pushed the advantage to three at 15-12. The Spartans answered by winning four of the next six points, including three kills, to trim the margin to one at 17-16 and force an Oberlin timeout. A pair of kills out of the timeout put Case Western ahead by one but Lam answered with a nifty kill to tie things back up. Another kill by Beacom capped off a stretch where the teams traded points which kept the score knotted at 22-22 as the Spartans took a timeout. An attack error out of the timeout by Case Western put Oberlin up one but three consecutive Yeowomen errors gave the set to the Spartans 25-23 to end the match.

Gibbs led all Oberlin hitters with 20 digs as she hit at a .286 clip. Lewis was the only other Yeowomen in double figures with 10 kills while Lam reached a season-high in assists with 42. On the defensive end, Kuzbari lead the way with 17 digs as Radic notched three blocks.

Oberlin remains home as it hosts Allegheny on October, 2nd for a 7:00 p.m. NCAC match.
