Yeomen Defeat Fighting Scots

Oberlin, Ohio — The Oberlin College men's tennis team defeated The College of Wooster Fighting Scots, 7-2, on Sunday.

Oberlin won all three doubles matches, giving them a 3-0 match lead. In the top spot, Stephen Gruppuso and Camron Cohen cruised past Wooster's top pairing,  8-2. The bottom two match-ups were much more closely contested. By matching 8-6 counts, James Dill and Elliot Nuss won the second flight, while Zachary Vaughn and Matthew Gittings took care of business in the third.

In singles, it would be the fifth and sixth flights that ultimately won the match for Oberlin. James Dill picked up his eighth career singles win over Nebyou Minassie, 6-0, 6-3, and Sam Topper defeated Jesse DeWitt, 6-1, 6-1, to seal the match.

Gruppuso and Cohen would pick up the final two match points for the Yeomen. Cohen won the No. 3 singles match up 6-0, 7-5 to put the sixth point on the board. In the top flight, Gruppuso beat Joaquin Abos Amo, 7-5 in the first, fell by the same count in the second but battled for a 10-8 victory in the tie breaker.

Oberlin goes to 6-9 on the year and is 1-1 in NCAC East play.

The Yeomen will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Ohio Wesleyan University to face the Battling Bishops starting at 5 p.m.
