Delaware, Ohio — The Oberlin College men's tennis team defeated the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops 7-2 on Friday evening.
The Yeomen won the first and third flight in doubles.
Stephen Gruppuso and
Camron Cohen improved to 6-2 on the year with a 8-6 victory over Felipe Duarte Rico and Jack Hibbard. In the third flight,
Matthew Gittings and
Zachary Vaughn defeated OWU's Miller Buckholz and Ben Stein, 8-4 to give Oberlin a 2-1 advantage.
In singles, Oberlin won five of the six matches. Gruppuso won the top flight over Hibbard, 6-4, 6-0, with
James Dill cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 victory in the third flight.
The other three match-ups were closely contested. Cohen won the final two sets, 6-3, 6-3, to win the third flight. In the bottom two matches,
Elliot Nuss defeated Omar Santiagonunez (6-7, 6-1, 10-4) and
Sam Topper survived a 6-1, 3-6, 10-8, decision in the final flight.
The No. 40-nationally ranked Yeomen go to 7-9 overall, while the Bishops fall to 14-11.
On Saturday Oberlin will face the No. 11-nationally ranked Kenyon College Lords, with doubles set to start at 3:30 p.m.
