Men’s Lacrosse Falls to DePauw

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team suffered a 14-9 defeat to the visiting DePauw University Tigers on Saturday afternoon at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.

Six different Yeomen found the back of the net in the setback with Jay Messina, Tom Decker, and Griffin Cappelletti each scoring two times to lead the attack.

The game was nip and tuck throughout the first half as the Tigers carried the slimmest of margins into the halftime locker room at 7-6.

A man-up goal from Matthew Barry opened the game's scoring and then Barry went into a giving mood as he set up Messina with his first goal of the contest to stake the Yeomen to an early 2-0 cushion.

Back-to-back finishes from Cappelletti reclaimed a 4-2 lead for the Yeomen but the Tigers' Will Roberts would find the back of the cage to make it a 4-3 Oberlin advantage after one 15-minute frame.

The Tigers would double up the Yeomen in the second quarter, outscoring them 4-2 in th frame. The two Yeomen tallies would come courtesy of freshman Michael Muldoon and Decker, who notched his 18th goal of the year.

In the second half, DePauw would increase their defensive intensity, holding the Yeomen to just three goals over the final 30 minutes of action.

DePauw scored the first four goals of the third quarter before Messina stopped the run with the help of a Cappelletti feed to cut the Tigers' lead down to 11-7 going into the fourth.

The final frame started with Decker's 19th tally as he cashed in pass from Messina but the Tigers responded with two straight scores to keep the gap at a significant margin. Regan Chasney would score the final Yeomen goal of the game but it was too little too late.

The Yeomen went 13-of-27 on face-offs with Max McAllister winning 12-of-19 chances while leading the team with eight ground balls.

Calvin Filson went all 60 minutes between the pipes and made 11 saves.

The Yeomen, who have dropped five in a row to fall to 3-7 overall and 0-3 in the NCAC, return to action on Tuesday night at home against Hiram College. The opening face-off is set for 7 p.m.
