Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College baseball teamed earned its first North Coast Athletic Conference sweep of the season, defeating the Kenyon College Lords by the scores of 8-2 and 9-2 on Saturday afternoon at Dill Field.
In game one, right hander
Ian Dinsmore was simply sensational in the complete game victory as he struck out six and walked just two while scattering seven hits over the nine-inning masterpiece.
His performance was backed by a quality start from
Zachary Steer as the southpaw put together six strong innings, allowing just one run and three walks with five punchouts.
Sophomore duo
Lawrence Hamilton and
Alexis Castillo powered the Yeomen at the plate as Hamilton finished 5-for-9 with two runs scored, while Castillo went 4-for-9 with five RBIs.
In game one, the Yeomen scratched out the game's first run in the bottom of the third on a first-and-third double steal play.
After Kenyon evened the game in the fifth, Oberlin had a big response in the bottom of the frame as Castillo belted a two-out three-run double to right field before
Jacob Thompson came through with an RBI single back up the box to make it a 5-1 Yeomen advantage.
It was later a 5-2 Oberlin lead but the cushion would only swell from there as Castillo delivered an RBI single in the seventh before the Yeomen tacked on two more in the eighth on a balk and a walk.
In the nightcap, the Yeomen would post single tallies in each of the first three innings to grab an early 3-0 lead.
Oberlin would take a 6-0 lead in the fifth, using three hits and a Lords' error to plate three runs in the inning.
Brendan Mapes got the rally rolling with a double down the right field line and would score on a single through the right side by Hamilton.
Parker Goldstein and
Jack Marsjanik also had run-producing hits in the inning.
The Yeomen would take advantage of another Kenyon miscue to score two in the sixth before getting their final run in the eighth on a double by Castillo.
The sweep moved the Yeomen's conference mark to 6-8 on the year and 14-16 overall. The Lords fell back to 19-14 and are also 6-8 in the league.
Oberlin is back in action on Tuesday at home against Heidelberg. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. The scheduled games for Sunday against Wilmington have been canceled.
