Baseball Drops Midweek Tilt to Heidelberg

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College baseball team opened a busy week, falling 17-7 to the visiting Heidelberg University Student Princess on Tuesday afternoon at Dill Field.

With a plethora of games on the horizon for the remainder of the week, the Yeomen used eight pitchers in the contest. Sophomore Lawrence Hamilton led Oberlin at the plate as he registered three of the team's nine hits, marking his 12th multi-hit game of the season.

Oberlin scored five of its seven runs in the second inning, erasing what had been a 3-0 deficit on four hits and a Heidelberg error. Ben Reed plated the Yeomen's first run with a bases-loaded RBI single and Brendan Mapes would follow with a run-scoring ground out. Hamilton then came through with a two-run single through the right side to score Reed and Andrew Sugarman. The final run of the rally came on a Berg miscue as Hamilton scored all the way from first on an overthrow to make it a 5-3 Yeomen advantage.

Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived as the Student Princess answered with a pair in the top of the third to even the score.

The game would eventually get away from the Yeomen as Heidelberg erupted for six runs in the fifth and four in the seventh to leave no doubt in the outcome.

Oberlin would get two more runs in the seventh as Hamilton led off the inning with a triple down the right field line and pinch runner Nick Nelson would then trot home on a double to right by Alexis Castillo. The final Yeomen run would come on a sac fly by Parker Goldstein.

Nick Dawkins was the second Oberlin pitcher to enter the game as he took the loss after surrendering three runs on four hits over two innings of work. Berg reliever Cayden Rollins allowed just two hits over innings three through six to earn the win.

Oberlin is back in action tomorrow in a key conference set against Denison. Game one of the twinbill is set to start at noon.
