Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team fell to the Kenyon College Lords by the score of 15-8 on Wednesday night at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
Tom Decker and
Griffin Cappelletti each had two goals and two assists to pace the Yeomen attack, while
Michael Muldoon added two scores and one helper in the setback.
The Lords appeared to take a 4-0 lead in the closing moments of the first quarter but had a goal waived off that seemed to jumpstart the Yeomen. A man-up goal from Decker off a feed from Cappelletti got the Yeomen on the board with 2:41 left in the opening period, which started a string of four straight Oberlin deposits.
Muldoon opened the second-quarter scoring with his 20
th tally of the year and less than a minute later,
Jay Messina followed with a man-up finish. The go-ahead goal also came courtesy of Muldoon as he cashed in a beautiful pass from Decker to make it a 4-3 Yeomen advantage.
Unfortunately, the Lords would close the half on a 5-0 run and then blank Oberlin in the third quarter with four more goals to break the game wide open as they ballooned the cushion out to 13-4 early into the fourth quarter.
Cappelletti would finally halt the Kenyon barrage with 11:48 to play and
Matthew Barry would follow with his 15
th goal of the year to make it 13-6 but it was too little too late to have a bearing on the final outcome. Oberlin, which outscored Kenyon 4-3 in the session, also got goals from Decker and Cappelletti late.
Calvin Filson went all 60 minutes in the net and made 15 saves.
Max Scott also aided the defensive effort with five caused turnovers, while
Dan Nerenhausen scooped up a team-high six ground balls.
Each team won 13 face-offs with Oberlin's
Max McAllister going 11-of-18 in the loss.
Oberlin put just 16 of their 36 shots on frame, while the Lords had 30 of the 53 shots they triggered be on target. Kenyon also finished with a slight 37-32 margin in ground balls.
The loss dropped Oberlin back to 4-9 and 1-5 in the NCAC, while Kenyon improved to 9-5 and 4-2 in the NCAC.
Oberlin will close out its home slate on Saturday as it hosts the College of Wooster at 4 p.m.
