Gambier, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's lacrosse team finished on the wrong end of a 16-15 decision at Kenyon College on Tuesday afternoon.
The trio of
Tess Siciliano,
Eliza Amber, and
Kyra Aviles led the Oberlin attack as they each cashed in three goals in the setback.
A goal by
Sabrina Deleonibus off a feed from Siciliano cut the deficit down to one with 7:03 left to play in the game but Oberlin was unable to find the equalizer down the stretch as the Ladies fended off multiple chances that ultimately went by the wayside for the Yeowomen.
The Biggest Kenyon lead of the game came with 20:36 left to play as Maya Flair finished off a pass from Lucy Somers to make it 14-10. However, the Yeowomen answered back with four consecutive scores to even the count. Siciliano's hat-trick goal was followed with back-to-back deposits from Aviles before Deleonibus tied the contest with 14:14 still left to expire.
Oberlin, which outscored Kenyon 6-5 in the second half, later trailed 16-14 and unfortunately could not find a way to square the match late.
In the opening portion of the game, Oberlin trailed 5-2 but a player-advantage goal from
Ali Wessel jumpstarted a string of three Yeowomen tallies that also included send-ins from Amber and
Leah Crowther to tie the game at 5-5 with 22:16 left in the opening half.
A string of four straight Ladies' goals was halted by
Bette Imhoff's seventh finish of the year. Moments later Aviles' first score of the game cut the deficit in half to make it 9-7. The two foes would alternate goals in the closing moments of the stanza as the Ladies ultimately carried an 11-9 edge into the intermission. The two Oberlin tallies came on an up-goal from
Hayley Drapkin and Sicilano's first of the night.
Siena Marcelle went all 60 minutes between the pipes and made eight saves to run her season total 125. Crowther also aided the defensive effort with a team-highs in caused turnovers (4) and ground balls (5).
Kenyon finished with a 38-29 margin in shots, but Oberlin had a 28-26 advantage in shots on goal. The Yeowomen also earned a 31-26 edge in ground balls, however, Kenyon won the draw control battle 19-14. Oberlin, which matched Kenyon with 26 turnovers, was also successful on just 12 of 23 clear attempts.
The loss dropped Oberlin back to 4-8 on the year and 3-3 in the NCAC. Kenyon improved to 12-2 and remained unblemished in conference play at 5-0.
The Yeowomen will honor their senior class as they conclude their home schedule on Saturday against Hiram. The opening draw is set for high noon.
