Yeowomen Falter in Spring Break Opener

Pomona, CA – The Oberlin College women's lacrosse team was held to a season-low seven goals as the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer defeated the Yeowomen, 14-7, late on Thursday night.

Oberlin's Hayley Drapkin scored the game's first goal just 34 seconds into the contest but the Sagehens took over from there, scoring five straight times before Oberlin was able to get on the board again.

Junior Eliza Amber was able to halt the run with her ninth goal of the year to make it a 5-2 Yeowomen deficit with just over six minutes left in the opening half. Tess Siciliano increased her team-leading goal total prior to the first-half horn but Lily Hermann answered back with 22 ticks left to expire to give the Sagehens a 7-3 advantage at the break.

After Pomona cashed in the first three goals of the second half to swell the lead out to 10-3, the Yeowomen did play with a greater sense of urgency over the final quarter of the contest.

Drapkin's second tally of the night temporally halted the Sagehen's run before Kiera Havill responded by pushing the gap back to seven at 11-4.

Three straight Yewomen goals from Drapkin, Siciliano, and Ali Wessel gave Oberlin life as the scoring surge shrunk the gap down to four with 5:19 left to play. Unfortunately, Pomona's Maggie Sweeney squashed the threat of a comeback with back-to-back goals to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.

Drapkin's hat-trick performance ran her season scoring account to 13, while Siciliano increased her team-best mark to 18 with a pair of tallies in the setback. Amber added five draw controls to move her team-best total to 20.

Siena Marcelle played the first 53 minutes in goal before leaving with 13 saves.

The loss dropped Oberlin to 3-4 while Pomona moved to 9-2.

The Yeowomen will conclude their west coast swing on Saturday against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges. The opening draw is set for 11 a.m. PDT / 2:00 p.m. EDT.
