Claremont, CA – The Claremont Mudd-Scripps Athenas scored early and often as they handed the Oberlin College women's lacrosse team a 20-3 defeat on Saturday afternoon.
The Athenas scored the first five goals of the game and never looked back as they carried a 13-2 lead into the intermission. Oberlin's first-half goals came courtesy of rookie
Bette Imhoff at the 17:22 mark and
Leah Crowther, who finished off a feed from
Hayley Drapkin with 3:35 left to play in the opening frame.
The final outcome was never in doubt in the second half as the running clock was in effect due to the double-digit margin in the scoring column. Oberlin's lone second-half goal came courtesy of
Eliza Amber.
CMS finished with 38-11 advantage in shots, including a 38-7 margin in shots on goal. The Athenas also scooped up 28 ground balls compared to Oberlin's 20. Draw controls were fairly even with CMS ending with a 13-11 edge. Amber led OC with seven draws.
Siena Marcelle (7),
Logan McDermott-Mostowy (5) and
Maranda Phillips (2) each saw action in goal and combined for 14 saves.
The loss dropped the Yeowomen back to 3-5, while CMS improved to 9-2.
Oberlin, which has dropped three out of its last four games, returns home to host Denison University on Wednesday night in what is sure to be a tough test against the reigning three-time conference champions. The opening draw is set for 7 p.m.
