Baseball Splits in Opening Four-Game Set with Carleton

Spring Break Stats (6 Games)

Tucson, AZ – The Oberlin College baseball team began its four-game set with Carleton, dropping game one 15-7 before bouncing back with an 8-4 win in the nightcap.

Freshman Jacob Thompson continued his impressive start to his collegiate career as he went 5-for-6 with two triples, a double, and six RBIs. Brendan Mapes, Lawrence Hamilton, and Parker Goldstein also added three hits each in the doubleheader.

In the game two triumph, senior David Gaetano picked up a taxed Yeomen bullpen by going 6.1 innings on the bump to lock down his first win of the season. The southpaw sprinkled seven hits and issued just one walk over 86 pitches (58 strikes) of work.

The Knights would post a pair of runs off Gaetano in the first inning but he would settle in from there as his offense picked up the slack as well.

The Carleton lead was quickly cut in half in the bottom of the first as Thompson rapped a two-out opposite field triple down the right field line to score Ben Reed.

Oberlin would take the lead for good with a three-run third that featured a two-run sacrifice fly by Thompson that plated both Mapes and Reed. Goldstein would tack on a run-scoring single to left center that sent Hamilton across the dish to make it a 4-2 Yeomen advantage.

The Yeomen would increase the margin with a solo tally in the fourth and would answer a pair of Knights' runs in the fifth with three of their own in the bottom of the frame. The rally started with a bunt single by Reed who would then score on Hamilton's triple to straight away center. Thompson would deliver again with an RBI double before senior Jack McGowan notched an RBI on a sac fly.

With the 8-4 lead in hand, the Yeomen would send Gaetano out to work the seventh but after two guys got on base with one out, Head Coach Adrian Abrahamowicz handed the ball to freshman closer Ian Ashby, who retired the next two Knight hitters to secure his second save of the season.

In game one the Yeomen appeared to be well on their way to a big offensive performance as they roughed up Carleton starter Matt Stamets for six runs on four hits and a walk in just a third of an inning. However, reliever Cayen Gardner came in and stymied the Yeomen bats, allowing just three hits and one run over the final 6.2 innings.

The Knights scored two runs in the first but the Yeomen would answer back with a 6-spot to claim a four-run lead after one inning. Hamilton jumpstarted things with an RBI double and Thompson followed with his first triple of the day. After doubling and stealing third, Goldstein would score on a fielder's choice by David Fineman. Reed would swell the scoreboard to six with a two-RBI single to left center to send Fineman and Jack Marsjanik across the dish.

Unfortunately, the Knights would respond with a six-run inning of their own in the top of the second before adding three in the fourth, one in the fifth, two in the sixth, and one in the seventh.

Rookie John Schooner would register his first-career hit in the seventh with a double to right before coming around to score on Thompson's single to center to cap the game's run total.

Oberlin, which is 4-2 on the trip and 6-6 this season, will play its final games in the desert sun tomorrow with another doubleheader against Carleton. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m. EDT.
