Baseball Concludes Spring Break with a Split

Final Spring Break Stats (8 Games)

Tucson, AZ – The Oberlin College baseball team concluded its annual spring break trip to Tucson, Arizona, by splitting a doubleheader with Carleton University for the second straight day.

The Yeomen surrendered a 6-1 lead in game one only to fall, 8-6, but they would respond by taking the nightcap 5-3 to finish the eight-game swing with a mark of 5-3. During the run, Oberlin batted .392 as a team with 91 hits, including 17 doubles and five triples. The Yeomen outscored their counterparts 66-52 over the four days and were successful on 25 of 33 stolen base attempts.

In game one Oberlin appeared to be well on its way to putting itself in position for a series win but things unraveled in the middle portion of the game while the Yeomen got complacent.

Oberlin jumped out to a 4-0 lead, posting a single tally in the second before adding on three more in the third. The game's first run came courtesy of senior Jack McGowan who placed a ball in left field to send David Fineman across the dish.

The Yeomen would use three hits coupled with a Knights' error to record the crooked number on the scoreboard. Jacob Thompson, who hit a team-high .593 on the trip, plated the first run of the frame with a single through the right side that sent Ben Reed home after he got the rally rolling with a bunt single. Jack Marsjanik would also have a run-scoring single in the inning, while McGowan drew a bases-loaded walk.

Carleton would get on the board with a run in third but Oberlin would respond with a pair in the fourth with two outs as Fineman came through with a two-RBI single to left center and was thrown out at second trying to extend it to a double.

Senior starter Jack Reiss pitched around some trouble in the first three innings but the Knights were able to get to him in the fourth as they got right back into the game with a four-run inning as they chased him from the game after the first four hitters of the inning would reach base.

Oberlin still had a 6-5 lead in hand but the offense went cold over the final three innings of the game.

The Knights would steal away the win with a three-run sixth, as they took advantage of two Oberlin errors and three hits. Oberlin would bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh with two outs but Peter Hoffman was able to finish the job to earn the save.

Game two was tied 3-3 going into the bottom of the seventh but Oberlin would load the bases with one out. Parker Goldstein would drive in the go-ahead run before the Yeomen took advantage of the second error of the inning by Carleton to tack on an insurance run.

Ian Dinsmore got the win in relief as he worked 1.1 innings of no-hit ball while striking out three along the way. Thompson locked down his first-career save as he pitched around a leadoff error to keep the Knights off the board.

Senior Musa Matiwane worked the first 3.2 innings and gave up just one hit and one unearned run.

Oberlin plated two runs on four hits in the third. Alexis Castillo had a run-scoring opposite-field single to left and Thompson would also add an RBI single in the frame.

The Yeomen fourth started with a double down the left field line by Ben Reed and rookie Nick Nelson would trade places with him to make it 3-1.

The Knights would get back to even with two runs in the fifth before the Yeomen pulled it out in the seventh.

Oberlin returns back to Ohio to open conference play on Saturday at Ohio Wesleyan.
