Tucson, AZ – The Oberlin College baseball team earned a doubleheader split with Grinnell College on Sunday afternoon, dropping game one 7-2 before bouncing back with a commanding 13-5 victory in the backend of the twinbill.
The Yeomen bats produced 20 hits on the day, headlined by freshman
Jacob Thompson who went 5-for-7 with two doubles, a triple, four RBIs, and three runs scored.
In the nightcap, senior
Ian Dinsmore earned his first-career win on the bump as he grinded his way through four innings, sprinkling nine hits and two walks to go along with four strikeouts. The right-hander from Cogan Station, Pennsylvania, had his pitch count driven up by the Pioneers as he tossed 104 pitches, 65 of which went for strikes.
After allowing two runs in the first, Dinsmore's teammates picked him up by answering with five runs in the home half of the inning. Oberlin had just three hits in the frame, but Grinnell starter Ryan Chang struggled with command as he walked three and hit a batter to hinder his cause. Thompson had an RBI double to left center and
Nick Nelson would also deliver a clutch two-out two-run single to give Oberlin a three-run cushion.
Following a sac fly by
Ian Ashby in the second, the Yeomen would add another pair in the third as Thompson dropped in a two-run double that the Pioneers' outfield lost in the sun to make it 8-2.
Oberlin would break the game wide open in the fifth, belting out five hits and scoring five runs in the inning to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.
Ian Ashby had an RBI single, while Thompson produced a run-scoring triple in the frame. Sophomore
Ben Reed also roped a two-RBI single in the rally.
In the lid-lifter, Yeomen senior southpaw
Zachary Steer was saddled with his second loss of the year as he worked the front three innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits and four walks.
Oberlin posted the game's first run, executing a first-and-third double steal play to make it 1-0.
The Pioneers would respond with single tallies in the second and third to take the lead before the Yeomen evened the count at 2-2 on a two-out RBI single by
David Fineman that sent Thompson across the dish.
Unfortunately for the Yeomen, Grinnell would respond with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth before adding an insurance run in the fifth.
Oberlin, which had nine hits in the game, was led by a 2-for-3 performance by
Brendan Mapes.
Sophomore
Lawrence Hamilton also had a hit in both games to run his season-opening hitting streak to 10 games.
The Yeomen are now 5-5 on the year, while Grinnell dropped back to 6-10.
Oberlin will open a four-game series with Carleton College tomorrow at 1 p.m. EDT.
