OBERLIN, Ohio - Oberlin College women's lacrosse used a late offensive surge to take down the DePauw University Tigers, 12-10, and remain undefeated in North Coast Athletic Conference play.
The Saturday afternoon triumph moves the Yeowomen to 3-3 overall and a spotless 2-0 in the NCAC.
It was nip and tuck throughout the first half as the two foes essentially traded scores in the early portion of the session. The Tigers' Grace Clarke netted the game's first goal just 29 seconds into the contest before the Yeowomen got back to even at the 26:35 mark on a free-position finish from
Tess Siciliano.
Â
After another Tigers' tally, back-to-back Yeowomen goals from
Eliza Amber and
Kyra Aviles briefly gave Oberlin a 3-2 cushion. The score from Aviles was setup by a feed from rookie
Bette Imhoff.
Â
The game was locked even at 3-3 before first-year
Juliet Mooney put the Yeowomen back in front with her first of three straight goals that increased the Oberlin lead out to 6-3 and forced the Tigers to take a timeout. Siciliano assisted on the first and third scores of the spurt, while it was
Leah Crowther who made the proper pass on the middle tally.
Â
In the final minute of the frame, DePauw would snap a near 15-minute scoring drought to shrink Oberlin's halftime lead down to 6-4.
Two Tiger goals drew the score level at 6-6 seven minutes into the second half before the Yeowomen found the back of the net.
Aviles connected with sophomore
Ali Wessel to give Oberlin a one-goal advantage, which would quickly be erased. The Tigers drew even, 7-7, with 16:25 remaining in regulation.
The two sides exchanged goals over the next 10 minutes of action with tallies from
Sabrina Deleonibus, Crowther and Aviles to knot the game at 10-10.
The difference came from a late spark of offense from the Crimson and Gold. Deleonibus bested DePauw netminder Kathryn Hopkins to break the deadlock and Aviles closed the door of the Tigers with a free-position goal at the 2:54 mark.
Oberlin goalies
Siena Marcelle and
Maranda Phillips tag-teamed for 11 saves, including key stops from Marcelle in the closing minutes to keep the Tigers at-bay.
Offensively, Aviles led the way for the Yeowomen with five points, (three goals, two assists) followed by Mooney who also finished with a hat-trick. Deleonibus finished with two goals against the Tigers, followed by Crowther, Wessel, Sciliano and Amber, each with one tally.Â
As a unit, the Yeowomen set the pace with 36 shots to DePauw's 26, 24 of which landed on frame. The Crimson and Gold finished 14-of-19 on the clear and scooped up 16 ground balls, led by Amber with three.
The Yeowomen will travel to the Golden Coast for two matches in California over Spring Break. Oberlin will battle Pomona-Pitzer on Thursday, March 28, before taking on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday, March 30.
