Yeowomen Get Set Aside at Mount Union

Alliance, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's lacrosse team dropped the final contest of its season-opening five-game road swing, falling 14-9 on Wednesday night at the University of Mount Union.

Sarbina Deleonibus, Hayley Drapkin, Tess Siciliano, and Eliza Amber each netted a pair of goals to pace the Yeowomen attack in the setback.

The Purple Raiders' Ashley Bernardi staked Mount Union to a 1-0 lead just 39 seconds in but the Yeowomen answered back with three straight goals to grab the early advantage. Amber got Oberlin on the board just inside the 25-minute mark and Drapkin followed with back-to-back tallies.

Bernardi would stop the Oberlin spurt with her second goal of the game but Siciliano responded with the help of a Deleonibus feed to make it a 4-2 Yeowomen differential at the 14:01 mark of the opening half.

Unfortunately, the Purple Raiders would take over from there, depositing the final four goals of the session to take a 6-4 cushion into the intermission.

Mount Union would register the first two goals of the second half to increase the lead out to four before Deleonibus stopped the bleeding with her first of two second-half tallies.

Bernardi continued to torch the Yeowomen as she pushed the lead back out to 11-6 with goals number five and six to ultimately make the deficit too big to overcome for the Yeowomen.

Siciliano and Leah Crowther would each score again for Oberlin but it was too little too late to have a bearing on the final outcome.

Mount Union controlled the run of play throughout, out-shooting the Yeowomen 33-17 while winning 19 of the game's 25 draw controls. The Purple Raiders also finished with a slight 18-15 edge in ground balls.

Siena Marcelle went the distance in goal, making 13 saves to mark her third double-digit performance of the season.

The loss dropped the Yeowomen back to 2-3 on the year while Mount Union moved to 5-1.

Oberlin will open its home slate on Saturday at 11 a.m. against the DePauw University Tigers.
