Springfield, Ohio — The Oberlin College women's lacrosse team won its North Coast Athletic Conference opener, 15-10, at Wittenberg University Saturday afternoon.
Hayley Drapkin and
Tess Siciliano led the balanced Yeowomen offense that had seven different players on the score sheet. Both players netted three goals a piece, with Drapkin adding two dimes. Also having multiple goal performances for the Crimson and Gold were
Bette Imhoff,
Leah Crowther,
Ali Wessel and
Eliza Amber.
On the defensive end, All-NCAC defender
Emily Berner caused four turnovers for the Yeowomen and picked up two ground balls. Amber also played well on the other end of the field, recording three caused turnovers and three 50-50 balls.
Oberlin got off to a hot start as Siciliano's second goal of the game off a Drapkin pass, put Oberlin up 6-1 with 13:57 left in the first half. After nearly 10 minutes of scoreless play, Wittenberg would outscore the Yeowomen 3-1 in the final four minutes of the half to shave the Oberlin lead to 7-4 at the intermission.
Amber beat the Tigers goalkeeper to open the scoring in the second half, but two Wittenberg response goals had Oberlin's lead down to 8-6 with 26:39 left to play. A pair of Drapkin goals kickstarted a 7-1 run that was capped by Crowther's sixth goal of her sophomore campaign with just 14:24 left on the clock. Wittenberg would outscore the Yeowomen 3-1 the rest of the way but the big second-half run was too much for the Tigers to handle.
Siena Marcelle was in net for all 60 minutes for Oberlin and finished the day with nine saves. The senior improves to 18-8 in her career and broke the 200-career save mark with her third save of the day (207).
The Yeowomen outshot the Tigers 37-27 and won the battle for ground balls, 19-18. Wittenberg controlled the draw though as they gripped 18 of the 27 draws.
The Yeowomen improve to 2-2 overall and will look to get above .500 on Wednesday night at the University of Mount Union. The opening draw is set for 7 p.m.
