University Heights, Ohio — Coming off an 11-day layoff, the Oberlin College women's lacrosse team fell to the John Carroll University Blue Streaks, 18-10, on Wednesday afternoon.
Tess Siciliano led the Yeowomen offensively with five goals, bringing the sophomore's total to 10. Along with the Sarasota, Florida native, senior
Hayley Drapkin netted two goals and was credited with four assists, while also causing two turnovers and a team-high six ground balls.
The Blue Streaks jumped out to an early 4-1 advantage when Emma Workman buried her second tally of the game at the 20:29 mark, with the lone early Oberlin goal coming out of Siciliano's stick.
The Yeowomen scored the next three goals of the game, evening the count at 4-4 with 16:36 left on Siciliano's third tally of the half. The sophomore kick started the run off a pass from
Eliza Amber. The spurt also featured
Sabrina Deleonibus getting credit for the seventh score of the season with the help of Drapkin feed.
Unfortunately for the Yeowomen, the Blue Streaks outscored them 5-1 the rest of the half to take a 9-5 lead into halftime.
Ali Wessel netted the final Oberlin goal of the frame with 7:38 left in the half as she was set up by Deleonibus.
Shortly into the second half, JCU built its lead out to six, 11-5, before the Yeowomen got on the board off an Amber goal with 25:15 on the clock. An unassisted goal by Drapkin cut the Blue Streaks lead down to five, 12-7, but a 6-1 run by John Carroll left the outcome never in doubt. Siciliano beat the goalie twice and Drapkin scored her final goal in the final 10 minutes of play for the Crimson and Gold.
Siena Marcelle put in a hard fought 60 minutes of work in between the pipes for Oberlin. The senior faced 49 John Carroll shots and recorded a career-high 24 saves in the loss.
The Yeowomen continued to struggle at the draw as John Carroll won 22 of the 30 bouts, while also earning a 36-20 advantage in ground balls.
Oberlin drops to 1-2 on the year, while the Blue Streaks improved to 4-1.
The Yeowomen open North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday as they face the Wittenberg University Tigers on the road with the opening draw scheduled for 3 p.m.
