Oberlin, Ohio — The No. 34-nationally ranked Oberlin College men's tennis team fell to No. 10 Carnegie Mellon University, 9-0, Saturday evening in the John W. Heisman Field House.
The Tartans took the three doubles match-ups, but the No. 1 and 3 Yeomen tandems put up the best fight.
Stephen Gruppuso and
Elliot Nuss earned four points against the No. 5-nationally ranked doubles team of Chaz Downing and Daniel Levine, while
Zachary Vaughn and
James Dill fell to Vayum Arora and Yannick Bloemby by a 8-5 count in the third flight.
Freshman
Sam Topper had the closest contested set in singles. The Irvine, California, native fell by a 7-5 in the first set of the No. 5 match-up, but Vayum Arora would take the point with a 6-2 second set.
Gruppuso dropped the top flight to the No. 9 ranked singles player in the country in Levine, 6-2, 6-3. In No. 2 singles
Zachary Vaughn eared some points for the Yeomen but ultimately fell to the No. 7 singles player in Division III, 6-2, 6-3. In the other two match-ups Nuss won five points in the defeat to Robert Levin in No. 4 (6-3, 6-2) and
James Dill did the same against Sam Gibson (6-1, 6-4) in the final match-up.
The Yeomen are back in action at home next weekend when they welcome NCAA Division II Ashland University to town on Saturday starting at 12 p.m. On Sunday the Yeomen will travel to NCAA Division I Cleveland State University to face St. Bonaventure University at 3 p.m. and the host Vikings at 6 p.m.
