Yeowomen Drop Season Opener at Baldwin Wallace

Berea, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's lacrosse team dropped its season-opening contest at Baldwin Wallace University on Thursday night, falling 15-9 on a blistering cold evening at George Finnie Stadium.

The Yeowomen struggled to find a rhythm on both ends of the field as the Yellow Jackets controlled possession throughout the 60-minute affair, evident by a 19-7 advantage in draw controls and a 36-20 margin in shots, including a 25-15 differential in shots on goal.

Hayley Drapkin led the Yeowomen with three goals while Ali Wessel and Eliza Amber each scored two times to pace the attack.

The Yellow Jackets got off to a quick start, opening up a 4-1 lead less than six minutes into the game. A pair of Oberlin response goals shrunk the lead down to just one as Wessel finished off a Drapkin feed and  Amber followed with a free-position goal at the 12:02 mark.

After a BW goal, an answer from Sabrina Deleonibus with the help of a Juliet Mooney assist had the Yellow Jackets' cushion down to 5-4. Unfortunately, BW would score three of the final four goals of the period to carry an 8-5 lead into the intermission. The final Oberlin tally of the session came courtesy of Drapkin as she finished off a player-advantage opportunity with 2:21 left to play.

Baldwin Wallace scored the first three goals of the second half to balloon the lead out to 11-5. The Yeowomen offense would find some traction to work their way back within striking distance as Wessel sent in a feed from Bette Imhoff at the 16:58 mark and Amber would win the ensuing draw and race down the middle of the field before riffling home her second tally of the game a mere eight seconds later.

Drapkin went low to later make it 12-8 but BW continued to keep up the pressure on both ends to prevent any chance of a Yeowomen comeback.

The Yeowomen finished just 14-of-29 clear attempts, while the Yellow Jackets were successful flipping the field 13 times on 17 tries.

Siena Marcelle went the distance in goal, making 10 saves on the night.

The Yeowomen have a quick turnaround as they travel to Muskingum University on Saturday. The opening draw is set for 11 a.m.
