Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's tennis team notched its first win of the season, sweeping the visiting Ohio Northern University Polar Bears, 9-0, on Sunday evening at the John W. Heisman Field House.
The match-up marked just the second time the Yeomen went up against a fellow Division III school this season.
The Yeomen swept through doubles with relative ease, dropping just nine games through all three flights.
Stephen Gruppuso and
Elliot Nuss were 8-2 winners in the top flight over Vinh Thai and Zach Beaschler.
Zachary Vaughn and
Sam Topper upended Connor Christian and Nate Meadors at No. 3, while
Camron Cohen and
James Dill were 8-4 victors in the second position.
Oberlin won all six singles battles in straight sets. The first to finish was Vaughn at No. 2 as he nearly went unblemished in a 6-1, 6-0, dispatching of Noah Elliott.
Nuss won by identical 6-2 counts at No. 4, while Cohen followed with a 6-3, 6-2, triumph over Beaschler at No. 3.
In the top position, Gruppuso set aside Thai by matching 6-3 scores, while the rookie Dill took care of Christian two times by a 6-1 scoreline at No. 6.
The closest battle was at No. 5 where Topper outlasted Andrew Cochran 6-4, 7-6.
Oberlin is back in action on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the University of Rochester.
