Cleveland, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's tennis team challenged itself against a pair of Division I teams on Sunday evening at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion on the campus of Cleveland State University.
The Yeomen fell 7-0 to both the St. Bonaventure Bonnies and the host Vikings of Cleveland State.
"It is always a fun challenge to play guys at a higher level as it forces you to raise your game and I am happy with the way our guys responded tonight," Head Coach
Eric Ishida said. "These matches will help us come April when we need to be at our best."
St. Bonaventure Recap
The Yeomen fell 6-1 in the first and third doubles flights, while the No.2 battle went unfinished as the Oberlin grouping of
Matthew Gittings and
Zachary Vaughn were forced to retire.
However, each player returned in singles with Vaughn going in the top position against Indra Patwardhan. The Yeomen junior picked up a game in each set, falling by matching 6-1 counts.
Gittings was the lone Yeoman player to take a set, doing so in the No. 6 position against Jonni Heikkila. The Oberlin senior dropped the first set 1-6 before winning the second, 6-4. In the super-breaker the two slugged it out but Gittings unfortunately finished on the wrong end of an 11-13 scoreline.
