Yeomen Fall Short at Wabash in Final Regular Season Contest

Crawfordsville, IN – The Oberlin College men's basketball suffered an 89-76 setback at No. 24 Wabash College on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Christian Fioretti led the Yeomen offense, scoring 16 of his game-high 22 points in the first half. Classmate Andre Campbell recorded a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, while senior Eli Silverman-Lloyd added 12 points to complete the Oberlin trio in double figures.

Oberlin stayed tight with the Little Giants throughout the first half, trailing just 14-12 eight minutes into the game. Wabash led by as many as seven with 9:05 left to play but the Yeomen continued to answer back. A pair of Hunter Bleeden free throws made it 33-31 with slightly over three minutes to go. In the closing seconds of the frame, the Little Giants were boasting a nine-point advantage but Joshua Friedkin beat the first-half horn from distance to shrink the deficit down to 40-34 at the intermission.

A quick burst by Wabash following the second-half restart pushed the lead out to 14, 52-38, with 16:14 left to play. The Yeomen continued to fight back but didn't have enough in the tank to overcome the Little Giants. The Yeomen deficit was down to seven, 60-53, following a transition 3-pointer from Silverman-Lloyd just inside the 11-minute mark.

The Little Giants' extended the differential out to 11 but the Yeomen would twice get back within seven – the last of which came courtesy of a Fioretti jumper to make it 74-67 with 5:07 still to expire. Unfortunately, Oberlin was unable to get no closer the rest of the way as the Little Giants completed an undefeated season on their home court.

Wabash's Jack Davidson broke the NCAA record across all divisions for consecutive free throws made as he hit his first three of the game to run the record to 95 straight before finally misfiring with 3:32 left in the first half. He finished the game with 27 points to lead all scorers.

Oberlin shot 44.6 percent in the setback, hitting on 25 of its 56 shots it hoisted. The Little Giants checked in at an even 50 percent with 30 makes on 60 attempts as they finished off the regular season at 20-5 and 14-4 in conference action.

The Yeomen head into the NCAC Tournament as the No. 5 seed, boasting a record of 13-12 overall and a 9-9 mark in league play. They will be heading right back to the state of Indiana on Tuesday night to play fourth-seeded Tigers of DePauw. Tip-time is set for 6 p.m.
