Yeowomen Take Down the Scots

Wooster, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team earned a commanding 66-49 win over The College of Wooster Fighting Scots on Wednesday night at Timken Gymnasium.

The Yeowomen were led by the backcourt duo of Cheyenne Arthur and Leo Ross as they combined for 32 points in the triumph. Arthur dialed in on 5-of-6 triple-tries en route to posting a game-high 17 points, while Ross added 15 points to go along with their game-high five assists. Junior Jasmine Sorrells was also impressive in 21 minutes off the bench, adding 10 points, seven rebounds, and seven blocked shots.

Oberlin trailed 5-2 three minutes into the contest but an Alex Stipano triple-hit evened the game and jumpstarted a 14-0 Yeowomen run that lasted over five minutes. Arthur would end the quarter with a 3-pointer to give Oberlin a 19-7 advantage at the conclusion of the opening stanza.

Arthur would start the second quarter the same way she ended the first – connecting from distance to push the margin out to 15. Wooster had the deficit down to 11, 28-17, but a 12-2 Yeowomen response gave them their first 20-point lead of the night as Tyler Collins capped the scoring burst with a layup with 2:40 left to play in the half that made it 40-19.

After carrying a 43-21 lead into the intermission, the final outcome was never in doubt for the Yeowomen. However, the Scots did use a 20-13 third quarter to chip away at the deficit – twice getting within 10 points, but Oberlin ultimately carried a 56-41 cushion into the final frame.

The Yeowomen would put the game away for good by scoring the first eight points of the fourth quarter, extending the lead out to 23 points for the second time of the game.

Oberlin shot 45.8 percent, connecting on 27 of the 59 shots it hoisted in the victory. Their swarming defense rejected 13 shots and held the Scots to just 26.4 percent (19-of-72) shooting.

The win avenged a mid-season hiccup against the Scots and ran the Yeowomen's record to 15-9 overall and 10-5 in league play, while Wooster fell back to 6-18 overall and 2-13 in the NCAC.

Oberlin will close out the regular season on Saturday afternoon at Wittenberg University. The Tigers, who were idle tonight, are tied with the Yeowomen for third place in the conference at 10-5. Tip-time from Springfield, Ohio, is set for 1 p.m.
