Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team cut the deficit to six points with 2:44 remaining in the contest before ultimately falling to DePauw 59-49 on Saturday afternoon.
Sammy Spanier led the Yeowomen with 15 points while
Leo Ross and
Cheyenne Arthur added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Jasmine Sorrells grabbed 11 boards in the paint to go along with eight points.
A 3-pointer from Ross pulled Oberlin with two, 13-11, at the 4:58 mark of the second quarter but DePauw ended the half on a 13-5 run to head to the break up 26-16.
After the Tigers pushed the margin to 15, 33-18, early in the third, but Ross hit another from beyond the arc before setting up
Jai Cunningham for a 3-point play to knock the deficit down to 11, 35-24, with 4:18 left in the quarter.
DePauw would again close a quarter strong as a 10-3 burst gave the Tigers their biggest lead of the game, 45-27, heading to the fourth.
The Yeowomen did not go quietly in the fourth however as they opened the period on a 9-0 run, with seven points coming from Spanier, to trim the lead to single digits at 45-36.
After DePauw stopped the run at nine, makes from Ross and Sorrells were capped off by a triple from Arthur to cut the deficit to six, 53-47, with less than three minutes remaining in the contest.
Unfortunately, the Oberlin comeback effort would fall short as it scored just two points in the final minutes as DePauw held on for a 59-49 victory.
The Tigers won the battle in the paint as they outscored the Yeowomen 22-10 and held a 48-32 rebounding advantage while taking 20 more free throw attempts than Oberlin.
Oberlin was hot from 3-point land as it shot 42.1% (8-19) from distance while the defense held DePauw to just 2-of-9 from long range and forced 19 Tigers' turnovers.
The Yeowomen remain home as they welcome Kalamazoo to Philips Gym on Wednesday, December 11 for a 6:00 p.m. non-conference contest.
