Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team earned its third win of the season, outlasting the visiting Kalamazoo College Hornets by the score of 51-43 on Wednesday night at Philips Gym.
Senior
Jasmine Sorrells led way as she notched a career-high 25 points to go along with a career-best 15 rebounds for her third double-double of the season and fourth of her career. Classmate
Cheyenne Arthur added eight points and seven rebounds in the victory.
Oberlin set the tone from the onset, scoring the game's first nine points. A layup by Sorrells later gave the Yeowomen a 16-6 first-quarter lead and Oberlin ultimately led 18-11 after one 10-minute session.
Early in the second quarter the OC lead was down to six, 21-15, but finishes by Arthur and Sorrells quickly pushed the advantage back out to 10, 25-15, with 6:42 left to play in the half. However, the Yeowomen failed to extend their cushion as they scored just two more points the rest of the way and had to settle for a 27-20 halftime lead.
The Hornets put the pressure back on the Yeowomen in the third quarter, using an 8-2 spurt to cut the deficit down to one, 29-28, at the 4:20 mark. Oberlin regrouped with a 6-0 response to create some breathing room en route to carrying a 39-33 margin into the final quarter.
Kalamazoo continued to fight but didn't have enough firepower to overtake the Yeowomen in the fourth quarter. They would twice cut the deficit to four with the second time coming with 4:21 left to play as Isabelle Clark finished off a traditional 3-point play for the visitors to make it 47-43. However, the Yeowomen would shutout the Hornets the rest of the way to preserve the victory.
Oberlin controlled the interior throughout the evening, out-scoring the Hornets 26-12 in the paint while winning the battle of the boards, 47-34.
The Yeowomen will take a break from action for finals and the holidays before returning to competition on December 28 when they take on John Carroll University on the campus Capital University.
