Gambier, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team held a two-point advantage heading into the final quarter of play before scoring 21 points in the fourth to beat Kenyon 52-41 in the NCAC opener on Wednesday night.
Jasmine Sorrells led the Yeowomen with 21 points and 10 boards for the double-double while
Cheyenne Arthur scored 14 and
Tyler Collins pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds.
A Collins' layup with four minutes remaining in the first half gave Oberlin an 11-9 lead before Arthur hit one of her three triples to push the margin to five, 14-9, as the Yeowomen headed to the break up 16-12.
Less than three minutes into the third quarter, Kenyon connected from long distance to retake the lead, 18-17, but Oberlin would answer with a 7-0 run to open up a 25-18 advantage.
A
Jai Cunningham layup with 3:03 remaining in the third made it 31-23 Oberlin but Kenyon closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to pull within two, 31-29, heading to the fourth.
The Ladies hit another from beyond the arc to take back the lead, 32-31, 30 seconds into the fourth but the Yeowomen responded again with an 8-0 run, thanks in part to four points from Sorrells, to regain an eight-point lead, 40-32, with 6:51 to go in the game.
Kenyon did not go away though as it cut the deficit to four, 45-41, with 1:30 remaining in the contest but Oberlin would hit seven of eight free throws down the stretch to seal the 52-41 road win.
The Yeowomen won the battle on the glass as they out-rebounded the Ladies 53-33, including 16-9 margin on the offensive end.
