Tiffin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team led by 10 with four minutes remaining before having to stave off a late charge by Heidelberg to hold on for a 71-67 win on Wednesday night.
Joshua Friedkin had a game-high 20 points while
Dorde Otasevic added 14 with six rebounds. Senior
Christian Fioretti got into double figures with 11 points to go along with five boards as junior
Jordan Armstrong took advantage of his first start of the season, scoring nine and snatching seven rebounds.
The 4-0 start for the Yeomen is their best season-opening stretch since the 1979-80 season when they began the year by winning their first six contests.
Oberlin held a 21-10 lead at the 7:35 mark of the first half before pushing the advantage to 15, 30-15, with 4:12 left until halftime but Heidelberg would answer with an 11-0 run to cut the deficit to four at the break.
A 3-pointer by Friedkin at the 17:14 mark gave the Yeomen a 35-28 advantage before Heidelberg responded again to tie the score at 37-37 eight minutes into the second half.
The home team used a made triple of their own to take a 44-42 lead with 9:33 left to go but Oberlin countered with a 16-4 run, thanks in part to two triples from Friedkin, to stretch the margin back to double digits, 58-48, with 4:09 remaining.
Heidelberg did not go quietly though as it scored nine points in 1:48 to pull within three at 61-58 with 55 seconds left on the clock. Fortunately, Oberlin made seven of its eight free throws in the closing seconds to seal the victory and leave town with its third road win of the season.
The Yeomen shot 42.3% from the field including 45.8% in the second half as they found their stroke from beyond the arc, making 11 of 21 attempts (52.4%).
Oberlin returns home on Saturday, November 23
rd for a 3:00 p.m. contest versus Alma.
